OUR PROJECTS

“The Republic protects health as a fundamental right of the individual and in the interest of the community and guarantees free care to the indigent” (Article 32 of the Italian Constitution).”

DonK HM’s commitment is articulated in social and health assistance activities located in the territory of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region and in international care and protection projects.

In particular the volunteers of DonK HM:

  • Guarantee free health care with basic and specialist medicine services for homeless people, asylum seekers refugees and victims of torture.
  • Help on the orientation of assisted persons to the services of the National Health System.
  • Monitor the application of the “right to health” as required by the Italian Constitution.
  • Monitor the state of health of people housed in units with a high population density.
  • Support training activities for operators involved in the host associations.

Less weight for emergency services

Whether it is the most fragile people of the populations or migrants, those suffering from respiratory infections, scabies and other less serious diseases, which however require adequate medical therapy, can find in DonK HM a poi of reference and help.

In the case of refugees, it can take several months from when they arrive in the territory to receive the health card that gives them the right to benefit from the Regional Health Service (SSR). During this time, their only resource in case of need for medical assistance is access to the emergency room.

Hence, DonK HM’s intervention significantly alleviates the burden on public health and the pressure on local emergency services.

COVID – 19 EMERGENCIES

DonK HM’s activity also continues during the pandemic.

The social and hygienic-sanitary conditions of some groups of the population and of the people affected by the migratory flows that cross in particular Friuli Venezia Giulia, from March 2020, could prove to be a real outbreak for the spread of the virus.

The monitoring and support activity for homeless and refugees made it possible to secure the resident population by extending the planned activity of the project by integrating it with that of prevention and sharing of health protocols disseminated by the regional authority.

DONKY – Donk’s mobile clinic

Donky is Donk’s mobile clinic, purchased thanks to the contribution of Fondazione CRTrieste and of Rotary Club Trieste Nord. The mobile clinic will allow our doctors and nurses to move in order to reach and oversee different areas of the city to give medical assistance to those who are in need.

Donky adds an ulterior service that brings a concrete benefit to people and the territory.

The commitment of the volunteering doctors of Donk Humanitarian Medicine is fundamental in order to assist people in an emergency state with continuity and who cannot access health care provided by the National Health Service, other than through the ER.

SALUTE! Festival del Volontariato e della Medicina umanitaria

It is a container of initiatives without limits of time and space, with the goal to stimulate the creation of virtuous relationships, promote a culture of peace, solidarity and respect of human rights and to be a source of inspiration to all those people who want to approach health professions.

To celebrate its first 10 years of activity, the Volunteering organization Donk Humanitarian Medicine decided to create the Festival that has the goal to share with the community the experience and stories of all those people who, every day, dedicate themselves free of charge to bring relief and care to the most fragile and the less fortunate.
