The volunteer network is an intertwining of stories, actions and aid in favor of the most fragile

Il nostro tempo e le nostre competenze sono dei tesori inestimabili e quando decidiamo di donarli agli altri acquisiscono ancora più valore. Abbiamo la possibilità di aiutare chi si trova in difficoltà e abbiamo la possibilità di arricchire anche noi stessi grazie all’incontro con le altre persone e i loro vissuti. 

I nostri medici, infermieri e volontari hanno storie e provenienze diverse, ognuno di loro ha scelto di mettersi a disposizione per fornire cure e assistenza medica gratuita agli indigenti, ai fragili, ai migranti e a tutti coloro che sono sprovvisti di tessera sanitaria e non hanno accesso ai Servizi di Emergenza Territoriale. 

Tra loro c’è anche Giovanna Cornelio, nostra volontaria storica, che ha dato il suo contributo nell’articolo dedicato al tema del volontariato e della solidarietà a Trieste pubblicato il 3 settembre su Il Piccolo. 

“Starmene con le mani in mano, quando – ricorda – ci sono tante persone bisognose, mi avrebbe fatto sentire inutile” ha detto Giovanna. “Credo sia dovere di ogni cittadino mettersi a disposizione per il bene comune”.

Lei è una dottoressa in pensione: tra i volontari di Donk Humanitarian Medicine odv ci sono anche infermieri, giovani studenti, specializzandi e persone che non appartengono al settore socio-sanitario ma che aiutano la nostra associazione in altri compiti più organizzativi. 

Our time and our skills are priceless treasures and when we decide to donate them to others they gain even more valor. We have the possibility to help those in difficulty and to improve ourselves as well, thanks to meeting different people and hearing about their life experiences.

Our doctors, nurses and volunteers have different life stories and origins, but each of them has chosen to provide free healthcare and medical assistance to the destitute, the fragile, the migrants and to all those without a health card and who do not have access to the Territorial Emergency Services.

Giovanna Cornelio is one of our historical volunteers and has given her contribution in the article dedicated to the themes of volunteer work and solidarity in Trieste published on the Il Piccolo on the 3rd of September. 

“Sitting around when, remember, there are a lot of people needing help, would have made me feel useless”, said Giovanna. “I think that every citizen’s duty is to pursue the common good”.

She is a retired doctor: among the volunteers of the volunteer Organization Donk Humanitarian Medicine there are also nurses, young students, grad students and people who are not a part of the health sector but who help our association nonetheless with organizationals tasks.

The article talks about other realities that operate in Trieste as well, and that help the most fragile in other ways than medical assistance, for instance by listening to them, by supporting people affected by disabilities, by taking care of the spaces or the animals and other activities for children.
