Migrants arriving in Trieste after long and complicated journeys need not only health care, but also administrative assistance and precise information to be aware of their rights and to navigate within the Italian bureaucratic system.
From this need, thanks to EMERGENCY’s experience, the socio-healthcare orientation desk was set up with the aim of facilitating the orientation and access of the frail and needy to the services of Trieste and Gorizia, also promoting a greater knowledge of the health and administrative services in the area.
Other fundamental services, activated thanks to the presence of a cultural mediator, are the activities of:
- accompaniment of patients with greater difficulties
- outreach in informal settlements and other reception centers to assess the plight of migrants in the area.
Stefano Bardari, president of Donk HM odv commented on the new project as follows:
“Donk HM ODV is pleased to collaborate with EMERGENCY, which has chosen to be in Trieste to bring its contribution and help the most fragile. Our association has been present in the area since 2012 and over time has guaranteed everyone the Right to Health by carrying out more than 20,000 free examinations. For this reason, we feel very close to EMERGENCY together with whom we will focus on migrants who arrive in Trieste through the Balkan Route and can thus find, after a demanding journey both physically and mentally, an important help in orientation, together with the free medical care provided by our volunteer doctors and nurses in the various fixed and mobile clinics active every week”.
We would like to thank EMERGENCY for involving us in this activity, which allows us to add yet another piece to the areas of intervention that our volunteers carry out to guarantee everyone the Right to Health.
